50 mayors face raps for operating open dump

Fifty mayors, 50 vice mayors and almost 500 other local officials are facing environmental charges in the Office of the Ombudsman for allowing open dumps in their municipalities, among other violations of the 15-year-old Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
Leyte councilman ordered dismissed

The Ombudsman in the Visayas has found Councilor Sergio Batistis Jr. of Albuera, Leyte guilty of conduct unbecoming of a public official, dishonesty and misconduct for allegedly selling fake documents to lawmakers during a convention in Davao City last year.
Warring groups settle land conflict amicably

Groups of Moro natives and Visayan settlers previously clashing over land in border villages of this city convened here on Friday afternoon to settle their decade-long land dispute amicably, following other peace arrangements in Central Mindanao. The city government had a hand in this settlement.
House fails on Cordillera autonomy bill

The third bid for Cordillera autonomy is dead in the 16th Congress but representatives of the region plan to resurrect it for the 17th session of the legislative branch government. Some lawmakers at the House sympathize with the bill's current author and bid to co-author it in the next Congress.
Caluya to become a province?

The island municipality of Caluya, Antique may soon become a separate province. The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a bill that would transform one or more islands into a province even without meeting the minimum land area requirement set by law.
Comelec to conduct mock polls in Pangasinan

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct a mock election in the cities of Dagupan and Alaminos on Feb. 13. At least 100 registered voters in two barangays from each city would take part in the mock polls.
E-trikes to ply Boracay roads soon

The Malay municipal government in the province of Aklan has drawn up plans to phase out the traditional tricycles and replace them with the environment friendly e-trikes.
The e-trikes would be the main means of transportation for residents, local and foreign tourists as the traditional tricycles are perceived to be harmful to the environment.
Angono LGU scores vs 'syndicated squatting'

The municipal government here has scored its latest victory in the drive against squatting with the Office of the Ombudsman clearing the local chief executive and another official here and some of the urban poor organizations, of any liability in connection with the municipal government’s program, dubbed as “Zero Squatting.”
BFAR opens fish landing centers in Marinduque

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has turned over to two municipalities of Marinduque new community fish landing centers (CFLC) that are intended to reduce post harvest losses and preserve the freshness of fish catch.
Marikina's tax take exceeds target

Marikina City Mayor Del de Guzman expressed his gratitude yesterday to the residents who dutifully paid their taxes for 2015. De Guzman issued his statement after business and real property tax records showed that actual tax collection last year surpassed its target collection.
