Among the distinctive characteristics of youth governance in the Philippines is the presence of a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) at the barangay level. As future leaders, the youth are given the opportunity to lead and take part in decision-making – an activity that necessitates skill and consideration of the challenges within the local political environment, and thus the need for guidance.
The importance of empowering the young generation and shaping their decision-making skills in light of good governance is among the significant steps in ensuring good leadership in the years to come. As a part of the endeavor to produce competent young leaders, CLRG conducts training courses for the youth sector in partnership with relevant stakeholders such as the National Youth Commission (NYC). For higher level youth leaders, CLRG partners with the National Movement for Young Legislators (NMYL).
With the help of higher tier LGUs (Provinces, Cities and Municipalities), CLRG was able to train federations of Sangguniang Kabataan Officers. These involve discussions and workshops on the challenging topics faced by the youth such as reproductive health, dealing with Out of School Youth. Training programs of the Center were also instrumental in boosting their confidence as young local leaders.
